Speech Pathology Protocol for Graduate Student Placement
  1. Thank you for considering Walter Reed as a clinical placement for your graduate students. We regard it as a professional obligation and privilege to assist in the education process. Currently we have five senior staff, one CFY and one contract staff position. Our caseload is primarily composed of adult diagnostic for inpatients and outpatients with Head and Neck Cancer, Neurological disorders, Dysphagia, Traumatic Brain Injury, Voice and Fluency disorders. We also have structured adult inpatient rehabilitation programs for fluency and TBI. The only Pediatric cases we routinely see are associated with the Cleft Palate Clinic which is held three times monthly.
  2. Please submit only one student for a specific time period. If you have more than one student you believe is available, please select the one you believe would benefit most from this particular facility. We do not necessarily have a graduate student extern for each time period if we do not have qualified applicants.
  3. A "Protocol for Graduate Student Placement" and Student Evaluation Form will be mailed to the University contact person specified..
  4. The student should have completed most if not all of the adult disorder course work for his M.A. and should be available at least four days and preferably five days weekly most of each day. Our work schedule is from 6:45 - 3:30 or 7:45 to 4:30.
  5. Immunizations Required Hepatitis B, 3 series or Declination Statement TB skin test results. If positive, proof of chest x-ray and physician evaluation. Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Chicken Pox (proof of disease or immunization).
  6. A University Affiliation Agreement must be established and/or updated with Walter Reed and the University and is managed by our Medical Education Department.
  7. Insurance. The University is responsible for providing liability insurance for the student.
  8. Interview Process: The student is requested to contact 202-782-8556 to set up a personal interview if placement is available. Time lines for placement: October for Spring placements, March for Summer and Fall placements.
    1. The student is requested to bring the following items to the interview:
      List of educational experience
      List of academic course work
List of clock hours, segmented into disorders and number of patients seen in each disorder.
List of goals for extern placement at WRAMC
List of test experience with adults
List of seminars, workshops, etc. and certificates obtained.
      Paragraph about previous clinical practicums
    2. Portions of the student interview are videotaped and the student will be asked to write on 2-3 disorder areas specifying evaluation procedures appropriate to the particular case. Disorder areas include Voice, Aphasia, Dysphagia and Traumatic Brain Injury.
    3. All student applications are reviewed by the entire Staff.
  9. The University and student are notified by letter of staff decision within two weeks after the student interview.
  10. If you have questions or need clarification, please call 202-782-8556 or the Clinic at the number above.
